SALIDA — Do not keep Weston Ranch waiting.

With Tracy American a player short for nearly 45 minutes Tuesday, the opening-round contest in the District 67 Senior All-Star Tournament with Weston Ranch was delayed for the better part of an hour. Weston Ranch responded with 10 runs in the first three innings at Salida Elementary School and coasted to a 14-5 win that ended just as daylight was running out.

The biggest inning for Weston Ranch was the first with seven runs. After a leadoff groundout, the next seven batters reached base and scored behind singles by Malik-Vega Tatum, Ryan Ostertag, Shawn Tinsley and Matt Spaulding. Ostertag reached base four times after being hit twice and going 2 for 2 with a double and two RBI. He, Tinsley (3 for 4, three RBI), Spaulding (2 for 3, two RBI) and Chris Martinez each had an RBI in that spurt and after grounding out to start the game, Isaac Leyvas singled in the last run of the inning.

Weston Ranch ran its lead to 13-2 after three innings only for Tracy American to take advantage of a Weston Ranch error in the fourth inning to draw within 13-4, taking the 10-run mercy rule off the table and allowing the game to extend past the fifth inning.

Weston Ranch used three pitchers to keep Tracy American bottled up. Rylan Tinsley started and went two innings, giving up two runs and two hits while striking out three. Outstanding fielding by Shawn Tinsley in right field helped keep Ryan Tinsley from giving up three runs.

On a single, Shawn Tinsley quickly got the ball back to Leyvas at second and Leyvas fired a relay to Chris Martinez at the plate to cut down Lorenzo Marchan trying to score to end the inning.

After making way for Shawn Tinsley in the third inning, Rylan Tinsley moved to right and made a diving catch to start the third and rob Tracy American of a leadoff hit. Shawn Tinsley went two innings and gave up two runs – one earned – and one hit.

Leyvas pitched the final three innings, setting down Tracy American in order in the fifth inning before giving up a run on three hits in the next two innings.

Weston Ranch faces either Salida or Manteca in a semifinal contest on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
