Giants win NL West; now the real fun starts

I really dig being a Giants fan right now.

And if you think I’m talking about Eli’s team after the Gigantes just clinched the NL West, you should move to Turlock.

After a tooth-and-nail fight for an entire season, the San Francisco Giants finally closed the door on their first trip to the postseason since 2003. For as many Giants-Dodgers games that I have watched that have meant something on the final day of the season, it’s hard to believe this is the first time since 1971 the Giants have clinched a postseason berth with a victory in their final regular-season game.

It shouldn’t be surprising to see these clowns do a first of anything, they have just gotten it done all year. When they were celebrating, you could only think that this group deserved that moment.

Aubrey Huff and Freddy Sanchez, or just call them Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates. The two dudes who got it crackin’ in the Giants’ 92nd win of the season had won more than 70-games only once in eight seasons with those clubs.

It meant something to this group and you could tell. When the A’s were posting up AL West pennants faster than they could inject a teammate, those guys weren’t even running on to the field to celebrate.

Everyone in that locker room knows they are part of this championship. Aaron Rowand is a bonafide savage; he took a ball off the face, Andres Torres got his shot and now he’s lucky to get an at-bat.

But without him they wouldn’t have been able to get it done. Think of how important Eugenio Velez was to the Giants when he went down in Arizona against the Diamondbacks. All season long somebody has had to get it done.

As perturbed as I was with Barry Zito Saturday, dude was 6-1 in his first eight starts when they definitely needed that out of the gate. Each player on their roster and in that clubhouse has earned his ring at one point or another this season.

And boy, do I like their postseason chances. The Atlanta Braves will make the long 3,000-plus mile trek from out there, and get exactly what they deserve. Tim Lincecum and a rested Matt Cain, should feel something like the postseason. Tim Hudson is no pushover, but it is tough to win in their stadium with a road jersey on.

It’s one thing to get to the postseason and then it is another to strive. They only need just one of those postseasons for the ages. Like Kirby’s, or Craig Counsel’s, or even Jeffrey Leonard’s insane ’87 series against the Cardinals. He was the series MVP and the Giants lost.

Somebody is going to get hot like that. It will probably be your favorite Giant. One of them is going to hit .417 with 10 hits and four home runs. Because this is the Giants’ year.

Not because I said so, but because it is.
