Manteca’s girls golf team suffered its first defeat of the Valley Oak League season on Thursday, but head coach Andrea Hiatt is focused on the positives.
Oakdale beat the Buffaloes 232-285 on the Manteca Park Golf Course front nine. All five of Oakdale’s scorers were in the 40s with Taylor Stewart’s 5-over par 42 leading the way.
Manteca, though, continued to shave strokes despite playing its third match in as many days. Kylee Eberle carded an all-time best 51. Taylor Reed finished with a 56, Bella Gonzales and Sierra Martinez each had a 59, and Haighley Kissee rounded out the team score with a 60. Hiatt said she set a goal for her players to score under 60 and was proud to see the majority of them achieve that.
The Buffaloes (2-1) will next take on Kimball at Tracy Country Club next Thursday, Sept. 8.

TRACY — The Lancers (1-1) evened their early-season record at Tracy Country Club behind medalist Natalie Cowan’s 42. Sophie White of Kimball was the runner-up with a 48.
Others contributing for East Union were Kindra Campbell (49), Hayley Leonard (52), Pressley Graham (56) and Kennedy Goodnough (60).

STOCKTON — Vanessa Benham dominated at the net, finishing with six kills and four blocks as the Timberwolves (2-1) coasted to a 25-17, 25-7, 25-18 victory.

Sierra rolled 25-3, 25-9 with Teresa Benham racking up 16 service points. Dulce Cruz provided offense at the net.

Setter Stella Brierly dished out 11 assists to go with 10 service points, and the Timberwolves made quick work of host Stagg, 25-12, 25-9
Diana Vargas-Zaragoza added eight service points, while Natalie Dias contributed strong play at the net.

The Timberwolves came from behind to knock off Chavez on the road Wednesday, 17-25, 25-9, 15-7.
Stella Brierly amassed 20 service points, and Alexis Flores had two assists.

OAKDALE — The Spartans were shut out but had chances to pick up points in their Valley Oak League contest.
No. 2 singles player Angela Algado dropped a 6-4, 0-6, 0-1 (6) loss to Carly Newbill. Eden Baca (4-6, 4-6) and Tala Alkhatib (3-5, 2-6) were also competitive in the No. 5 and 6 spots. The No. 1 doubles team of Marisa Briseno and Bernice Vilches lost 4-6, 1-6.

There were several close calls up and down the ladder in this non-league match at Manteca.
Stephanie Mercado (injury default), Gladis Sandoval (5-7, 6-1, 6-3) and Makenna Condit (6-1, 6-0) won their matches at Nos. 4-6 singles. Julianne Eavenson and Noeli Mercado took the No. 2 doubles match, 6-2, 7-5.
No. 3 Julia Tang was edged out, 6-1, 4-6, 3-6. Rav Dhillon and Navina Mann (3-6, 7-6, 5-7) and Melissa Poncini and Monica Lozano (4-6, 6-3, 1-6) also lost in three.
