TRACY – Spreckels Park used a pitching-by-committee approach while taking advantage of 17 walks on the way to a 14-5 second-round victory over Amador West of Ione in the Little League Section 6 Junior All-Star Tournament at Monticello School.

Spreckels Park used six pitchers – Rafael Diaz, Slyder Blyth, Christian Cruz, Jesse Ortiz-Martinez, Luis Aquila and Steven Eaves – to limit Amador West to three hits while striking out 10 and walking seven.

Diaz started on the mound and reached base five times and scored three times with four walks and a two-RBI single that was part of a four-run second inning. Cruz and Ortiz-Martinez drew bases-loaded walks in the second to pick up an RBI apiece.

Blyth was hit by a pitch, walked, reached on a fielder’s choice and singled in the lone run of the fourth inning for Spreckels Park, scoring Derrick Kuwada. Diaz walked and scored on an error in the fifth and the Amador West pitching really struggled in the sixth and seventh innings, issuing eight walks and a hit batter to lead to eight runs for Spreckels Park behind no hits.

Leadoff batter Ortiz-Martinez reached base three times – all on walks – and scored three times.  Joseph Lomeli reached base four times – twice on a fielder’s choice, once on a walk and once on an error, notching an RBI on one of his fielder’s choices.

Amador West will play the District 8 representative tonight with the winner facing Spreckels Park on Saturday morning at 9 in the championship round.
