ROSEVILLE — Local competitors drew tough first-round assignments Thursday morning in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Tournament at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club.

Sierra junior Claire Banks took on fourth-seeded McKinna Macias of Whitney, while the Manteca doubles team of Elizabeth Tolbert and Koryn Menasco was matched with the No. 1 tandem. Although they were swept, they were able to put up a fight against their favored opponents.

Macias held off Banks in a well contested first set before posting the 6-4, 6-0 win. She went on to beat unseeded Shirley Kwong of McClatchy to set up her showdown with No. 1Hannah Highsmith of Vista del Lago. No. 3 Emily McCormick, also of Vista del Lago, takes on Oakmont’s Denise Arendain in the other semifinal today.

Tolbert and Menasco, doubles champions of the Valley Oak League, battled Rio Americano’s Sydney Komienic and Jenna Kotal to several deuce points but could only pull out two in a 1-6, 1-6 defeat. Much like in the singles tournament, the four seeded doubles pairs are left for the semifinals. The Komienic-Kotal combo squares off with Cosumnes Oaks’ Rene Kum and Estelle Decaroli. On the other side of the bracket is another Rio Americano duo in Amy Langlois and Claire Chally and Del Campos’s Kirsten Chrisco and Sabryana Boudreau.

Central Catholic’s Amie Ardis tallied the only win for the VOL on Thursday. She topped Melanie Silva of Los Banos 6-2, 7-5 before falling to McCormick 1-6, 0-6.
