1984: Chris Indelicato drives in four runs in Lancer baseball win

Thirty years ago, on April 15, 1984, Marilyn Elkins’ heave of 39 feet-1 in the shot put in the talent-laden Ceres Invitational track meet held at Modesto JC gave her first place. With the win and last week’s first place (42-4) in Sacramento’s Meet of Champions, Manteca High’s Elkins continues to prove that she is one of the top shot putters in the state.

100 years ago: April 17, 1914 – The splendid weather of last Sunday brought out a good attendance to witness the second baseball match of the season between the local White Sox and the Modesto Independents. After Modesto didn’t even get a hit, Manteca got a good start with four hits and two runs in the first inning and that score stood as the total score. Modesto got 12 hits in the game to Manteca’s 16.

80 years ago: April 19, 1934 – Manteca High lost its first game of the season to a weak Hilmar High nine last Friday on the local field by the score of 8 to 6. Milo Candini pitched the first six innings and allowed eight runs and six hits. He struck out 10 batters.

60 years ago: April 22, 1954 – Manteca High won its third game in a row as they downed the Modesto High baseball team by a score of 8 to 5 on the Modesto diamond. Les Brandow slammed the first pitch of game for a home run and went on to have a perfect day at the plate, hitting three for three. Jerry Candini, Monte Kinsley and Emmett Lee also got two hits apiece to help the Buffalo cause.

50 years ago: April 20, 1964 – Lincoln High pounded out a 19-5 win over the previously undefeated Manteca High baseball team. The Manteca 10-hit attack was led by Paul Goodwin and Bob Leatherwood. They both went four-for-four, with two of Goodwin’s hits going for home runs.

40 years ago: April 19, 1974 – Better mileage paid off for Oakdale High as both the Mustangs and East Union High collected 11 hits, but the locals couldn’t come up with enough runs and dropped a 6-3 Valley Oak League diamond tilt. Carl Esquivel led EU with a perfect three-for-three.

Managing to capture only four firsts out of 16 events, East Union High’s track squad was swamped 84-48 by Los Banos High. Jerry Tucker, the outstanding Lancer miler, took his specialty in 4:37.3 and then returned to take the 880 in 2:04.3. Jim Buck soared 12-6 to grab a win in the pole vault, while the Lancer mile relay team of Martin Tokmo, Mike Mitchell, Bruce Jones and Tucker defeated Los Banos in 3:46.1.

A four-run rally in the sixth inning fell one tally short of bringing Manteca High back from a 6-1 deficit and the Buffaloes had to swallow a 6-5 baseball loss to St. Mary’s High.

30 years ago: April 17, 1984 – East Union High snapped a two-game losing streak Monday, reaping the benefits of 15 walks from Gustine High pitching to take a 13-6 victory in the second round of the Orestimba Baseball Tournament. Chris Indelicato was the main cog of a nine-hit attack. He had a perfect four-for-four with a double and four runs batted in.

Pete Nelson drove in three runs on two hits and Billy Martinez pitched impressively in his first start of the year as Manteca High struck early and cruised to a 9-3 victory over Ceres High in second-round action of the Windemuth Baseball Tournament. Martinez scattered eight hits, struck out eight and went the distance for the victory.

20 years ago: April 16, 1994 – A 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 backstroke keyed the East Union High girls’ 92-78 VOL swimming victory over Los Banos High on Friday. It was also a good day for the Lancer boys who cruised past the short-handed Tigers 123-35. Heidi Whole was a double winner for the EU girls, taking first in the 100 back and the 100 butterfly. In the boys’ competition, Scott Souza, Brett Hinton and Travis Gurney each won two races.

Both city high school golf teams logged victories over VOL opponents on Friday afternoon. Four of Manteca High’s top five scorers were within a stroke of each other in a 212-221 triumph over visiting Los Banos High at the Manteca Park golf course. Ethaan Boyer shot a 41 to pace the Buffaloes. East Union High’s Brandon Ueda fired a three-over-par 39 for medalist honors in a lopsided 208-247 win over West High at the Tracy Country Club.

Manteca High fell 12.5-3.5 to Bear Creek High in a VOL tennis match Friday. MHS had wins by Helios Martinez and the doubles team of Levi Frisk-Joey Rhodes.

Manteca High took a commanding 8-0 baseball win from Livingston High on Tuesday, led by the pitching of Don Morgan and the hitting of John Tubbs. Morgan tossed a three-hitter, while Tubbs had three hits, including a home run and a double. Morgan struck out eight Wolves batters. Coach Jack Thomson’s Buffs banged out 11 hits.

A combination of physical and mental errors led to East Union High’s 8-6 loss to Livingston High in VOL baseball action yesterday. It was the fifth straight loss for Coach Darrell Hardcastle’s Lancers. Gene Ballardo and Ben Kelley had a pair of hits apiece for EU.

The Manteca High swim teams finished first in every race but one Friday in a convincing win over Calaveras High. The boys won every race and swept in eight to take a 137-30 win over the Redskins. The girls won all but the 50 freestyle in rolling to a 126-39 victory. John Lowry, Skip Stellhorn and Brad Masterson all won a pair of individual races and swam on two winning relay teams for the Buffalo boys. Deni Lowry and Natalie Nobriga accomplished the same feat in the girls division for MHS.

Take seven Livingston High errors, sprinkle in seven Manteca High hits, add a dash of aggressive base-running and you have the recipe for an 8-2 Lady Bu ff softball win. Vickie Penrod and Jamie Plath had two hits apiece for MHS and Penrod added two runs batted in.

With the East Union High bats reawakened and some sterling defense to help out, the Lady Lancers posted an easy 7-1 softball triumph over Oakdale High on Tuesday afternoon. Melissa Lucas clubbed a triple and both Andrea Long and Kim Clark ripped doubles for EU.

The Manteca High girls track team grabbed a pair of wins at Sonora High Wednesday afternoon, beating Sonora 73-46 and Livingston High 73-39, but the boys dropped a decision to Sonora 93-54 while topping Livingston 45-21. Kathy Martin was a double winner for the 4-0 Lady Buffs, with firsts in the long jump (15-9.5) and in the triple jump. Jomayo Seward won the 200 meters in 24.3 for the Buffalo boys.

The East Union High tennis team pulled off an 8-7 upset win over Oakdale High Wednesday. The Lancers got three singles wins from John Vu and a win from the doubles team of Aaron Tredway-Eric Zacharias.

The East Union High track teams rolled to VOL wins over Oakdale and Los Banos Highs Thursday. The Lady Lancers scored 79 points to remain undefeated in league competition. On the boys’ side, EU tallied 99.5 points to easily finish in front of Los Banos and Oakdale. The Hird sisters, Linda and Anna Marie, swept the two top spots in the hurdles races and Linda also won the triple jump. Danielle Bezner bettered her own school record in the shot put with a distance of 35-11.5. Daniel Gohlke topped the distance races, winning both the 3,200 and the 1,600 meter runs. Sprinter Bobby Brown dominated in the shorter events, taking both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
