SONORA — Good news first: Sierra remains two matches ahead of the Valley Oak League’s second-place teams after narrowly dropping its first conference dual match to Sonora 209-211 at Mountain Springs Golf Course.
Bad news: Coach Jeff Williams said there will be little room for error as the pressure will be on the shoulders of his Timberwolves at next week’s VOL Championships. Winning the season-ending tournament would give Sierra, which is now 12-1 with one match to go, its first boys golf championship in school history.
“Sonora played real well today and we didn’t,” Williams said. “If we want to win the title, we have to win the tournament now.
Sierra has been lights out from top to bottom all season, but some had their struggles on Mountain Springs’ challenging par-36 front nine.
Luis Zepeda led the way with a 40, Miguel Dominguez followed with a 41, Joey Matts and Michael Hajenga each with a 42 and Sammy Matts a 46.
