WALNUT GROVE - An easy drive and great food.

What better way is there to spend a lazy Sunday morning?

It is about an hour drive 43 miles from central Manteca to the heart of the Delta where you’ll find the Ryde Hotel in art deco pastels with the required palm trees hugging the Highway 160 levee three miles south of Walnut Grove.

The Ryde Hotel has a rich history as a Speakeasy. Today it is a hotel and a popular spot for wedding receptions. There is even a small golf course and boat ramp.

But what you’ll find most appealing is the Sunday brunch served from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

You can enjoy brunch in the elegant 1927-era dining rooms or out on the front patio overlooking the river as the occasional highway traveler passes by.

The cost is $27.95 per person. Those under 10 get to eat for half price.

Reservations aren’t required but are suggested by calling (916) 776-1318.

The brunch was top notch with my favorite being vegetarian lasagna, the expansive domestic and international cheese selections, homemade breads and a made-to-order omelet station. Of course, the chocolate mousse and cheese cake are to die for but you should expect that in a place that offers brunch at $27.95 a clip.

There is chef carved prime rib with creamy horseradish, chef’s choice seafood filet, fresh seafood selection, Caesar salad, eggs Benedict, mixed green salad with gorgonzola and toasted walnuts, grilled vegetables, pasta salad, fresh fruit, bacon, sausage, buttermilk breakfasts with country gravy, plus roasted potatoes with herbs. The French toast is served with toasted pecans and warm maple syrup.

Other desserts include chocolate brownies and chocolate chip cookies among others.

The price includes house champagne mimosa, orange juice, coffee, and soft drinks.
