Chez Shari is having a 49ers party on Sunday.
The facility at the Manteca Park Golf Course will be airing the conference championship on a 10-foot screen off a high-definition projector.
The featured matchup will be that of the New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers NFC title game at 3:30 p.m.
Drink specials include a 12-ounce Budweiser Light on draft for $1. A purchase of a beverage includes free food, according to Frank Guinta, owner of Chez Shari.
Food choices will consist of hot dog, hot link, polish sausage, wedge potatoes, and much more.
But this event is more about the game.
Guinta has been a 49ers fan since the days of quarterback Y.A. Tittle. At one point, he was also a Dallas Cowboys fan. “That was during the days when I was coaching the Manteca Cowboys,” Guinta said on Friday.
But he dropped the Cowboys after the unceremonious firing of legendary coach Tom Laundry.
“Since then, it’s been all 49ers for me,” Guinta said.
His fandom for the team was further cemented in the 1990s when he met quarterback Steve Young at the Stockton Speedway. Guinta was there sponsoring one of the drivers.
Young was at the speedway to root on kicker Mike Cofer, who used an assumed name while competing in the Late Model class.
Guinta not only recognized Steve Young but later enjoyed a four-hour conversation with the future Hall of Fame quarterback.
Cofer kicked for the 49ers from 1988 to 1993. Included were the back-to-back Super Bowl titles – namely, SB XXIII and SB XXIV – and stints with New Orleans Saints (1987) and Indianapolis Colts (1995).
How was Cofer as race car driver?
“He was a lot better as a football player than a racer,” Guinta said.
