New retailer for vacant Best Buy

The vacant Best Buy store in The Promenade Shops at Orchard Valley will soon have a new retailer by year’s end.

Poag & McEwen has leased the space to another retailer that plans to be making interior improvements this fall. the name of the new tenant hasn’t been released.

Best Buy closed 50 stores nationwide three years ago this month — including the Manteca location — as it shifted resources to compete with online vendors.

Analysts have noted Best Buy has been slammed hard by customers who use its retail stores as showrooms to examine products but then go on line to buy with Amazon.com being the biggest benefactor. Best Buy has since worked to reverse the trend.

Best Buy opened its Manteca store in 2009 five months after Bass Pro Shops opened.

At the time of the closure, company officials said the fact that Manteca was surrounded by other Best Buy locations in Modesto, Stockton, and Tracy was a factor in it being picked for closing.

Lesson at MHS saves a life

Give Manteca Unified School District points for equipping students with knowledge on how to save lives.

.Caroline Thibodeau, who oversees Manteca Unified health services, passed on the following email from Manteca High math teacher Sarah Fox to school Principal Frank Gonzales:

“I had a student come up to me Tuesday morning and share the following story with me. Billy came in early Tuesday morning to tell me that he was sorry that he hadn’t been in school. I asked him if everything was alright and he told me that his dad had a heart attack. He proceeded to tell me that he had to give his dad CPR until the ambulance arrived. The doctors were able to save his father’s life. Billy performing CPR contributed to his dad surviving.  Billy didn’t know anything about CPR until he learned it from one of his classes here at MHS. He is pretty proud of himself and so he should be. The family is still struggling with the complications of the heart attack, but his dad will be okay.”

It should be noted all freshmen in Manteca Unified are taught CPR in PE classes with the Manteca High instruction taking place just three weeks ago on May 8.
