A Manteca transient reported to be in critical condition Monday night after being struck by a car on his bicycle about 6 p.m. in the 300 block of Moffat Boulevard.

Manteca Police Sgt. Mike Aguilar said a southbound motorist in the early darkness struck the man as he was riding his bike across the roadway toward a motel in the area.  The victim was thrown from his bicycle and the bike came to rest against a curbing on the north side of the street.

He was taken to a trauma unit at a Modesto Hospital.  His identity was withheld by police until family could be notified.  Moffat was blocked for hours while the accident was investigated by traffic officers.

In another incident Monday night police joined Wal Mart employees searching for a seven-year-old girl at the South Main Street store.  Sgt. Aguilar said the store locked down their facility to further assist in the search with the officers, but the girl was never located.

Every inch of the store was searched as well as its coolers and dumpsters behind the facility.  Aguilar said the police dispatcher had received a call by a woman who said she had dropped the girl off and said she was back within two minutes unable to find her.  The caller could not be located and had not left a call back number, officers said.

Aguilar said police had received an earlier call some weeks ago telling of a missing juvenile that turned out to be unfounded.
