Manteca area students planning a career in the medical field are urged to pick up a scholarship application at the front desk of Doctors Hospital of Manteca.

A deadline of March 11 has been set for students to apply for the scholarships.

The hospital auxiliary has handed out thousands of dollars to second year medical students, and  those who are about to enter their second year.   Since 1979, 10 to 20 recipients each year have received educational grants amounting to between $300 and $1,500 each, according to Gayle Foster, chairman of the scholarship event.

It is the proceeds from the hospital gift shop run by the volunteers that make the medical education support program possible.

“At the height of the Beanie Baby craze in 2000, a $30,000 in scholarships was presented to students,” Foster said.

She noted that students have gone on to become surgeons, general practice physicians, and nurses – with a few of the nursing students now on staff at Doctors Hospital of Manteca.

Those applying for the scholarships must be graduates of a high school within the Manteca Unified, Ripon Unified or Escalon Unified school districts.  The applicants are reviewed for their grade point averages, volunteer history and leadership experience.

The original gift shop was first organized in 1967 – five years after the hospital opened – through the efforts of Lee Ramsey and Joanne Thompson and consisted of only a counter and display cabinet.  It was set up in the main entrance on Cottage Avenue, Foster said.  It has since been moved several times until today being located in the main hospital lobby on North Street.

Donna Kinser is the chairman of the gift shop operation – in that role since 1998.  Dorothy Orsborn is the co-chair and Cecelia Drake serves as the bookkeeper.
