Leo Zuber had passion for education and students.
That’s according to the Ripon Unified Superintendent Louise (Nan) Johnson, who is looking forward to the renaming of the alternative education facility at 729 W. Main St.
She sees the “Leo Zuber Education Center” as having a nice ring to it.
At Monday’s meeting, the school board voted 4-0 to go along with the naming committee’s recommendation to honor Zuber, who retired just a few years ago, and was superintendent of the RUSD for 14 years.
Before that, he was director at the district office and also served as a school principal.
“There was discussion of his passions as an educator and a variety of facilities were discussed to honor his contributions to RUSD,” said Johnson, who facilitated the Aug. 24 meeting to consider the proposal to name the alternative education building in honor of Zuber.
The committee consisted of Rod Wright, Kye Stevens, Sylvia Mundt, Lance Morrow, Robyn Udavi, Linda Sawdey, Brenda Machado, Connie Jorgensen, Helen Caetano, and Kathy Coleman.
Zuber’s legacy at RUSD included such construction projects as Park View Elementary School and the North Gym at Ripon High.
“We were looking at an area with a lot of traffic,” said Johnson.
The alternative education was just that with its prominent location on Main Street.
As for cost, the district will fork out the $878 necessary for the lettering and installation of the sign “Leo Zuber Education Center.”
