A new plant nursery and garden center may take root near Kaiser Hospital on West Yosemite Avenue.

Lathrop resident Jonas Schambeck is seeking approval of the Manteca Planning Commission to open Rainforest Nursery on the south side of West Yosemite about midway between Airport Way and Fishback Road.

An existing 7,600-square-foot pole-barn will be used as storage and not accessible to customers.

Most of the remaining area on the 1.89-acre parcel will be utilized for the sale of landscaping plants and bulk materials such as gravel, sand and bark. There will be numerous shade canopies employed.

Future plans call for a 1,500-square-foot sale building.

Initially, on-site improvements required are a bathroom structure plus five standard parking stalls and one handicapped accessible stall.

Also required is widening Yosemite Avenue along the frontage, installing an eight-foot wide sidewalk with tree wells and a 10-foot deep landscaping strip.

The Manteca Planning Commission will review the plans during Tuesday’s 7 p.m. meeting at the Civic Center, 1001 W. Center St.
