Property immediately east of the HOPE Family Shelter on West Yosemite Avenue may accommodate additional space for homeless Manteca families.

The Manteca Redevelopment Agency staff is working on a deal that would have the RDA lease parcels at 520 and 524 W. Yosemite Ave. then sublease them to HOPE Ministries for the development of a  playground, additional shelter for families, and administrative offices.

The lease is proposed at $15,000 a year for 10 years.

The RDA in November approved a $1,243,440 loan to HOPE Ministries to renovate the family shelter at 526 W. Yosemite Ave.

The shelter needs to be brought up to code, have aging or failed systems replaced, to make it safe and to become more energy efficient. An existing office will be converted to an apartment to bring the number of available units for homeless families up to eight.

HOPE Shelter Executive Director Dave Thompson said the construction that is expected to start this spring would mean that families can’t be served for a number of months but that after work is done capacity will be increased 17 percent plus “a 93-year-old building on the outside will be brand new on the inside.”

Since the doors of the shelter opened in 1992 Hope Shelters have assisted more than 2,000 families get back on their feet. HOPE Ministries also operates two other shelters.

Thompson said HOPE Shelters’ 60 to 65 percent success rate is due to the programs and assistance those staying there get in terms of how to better manage their finances and lives.
