Lathrop stabbing followed fight at Fireside Inn

While detectives are still determining who is at fault in pair of separate assents in Lathrop early Sunday morning that left one man dead of stab wounds and another recovering from a gunshot wound, they have determined where one of the two incidents took place.
According to San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Dave Konecny, the man who was discovered by Lathrop Police Services at 3:07 a.m. on Sunday with multiple stab wounds in the 15000 block of Fifth Street was involved in an altercation at the nearby Fireside Inn that either preceded the stabbing or was the location of the actual assault.
The man’s name has not yet been released.
Earlier in the morning at 1:30 a.m. deputies responded to the 200 block of J Street where they discovered a male shooting victim who was ultimately transported to an area hospital. The man’s injuries were not live threatening, and he is expected to recover from his wounds.
Konecny said that currently the two incidents are being viewed as occurring cases, but detectives are investigating all available leads and scenarios. There are no officials suspects at this time.
The Fireside Inn became local news in 2008 when David Bonde – who was convicted of murdering 30-year-old Ryan Gomes early on Christmas morning the year before – testified in court that he had been drinking at the bar the night before he walked to Manteca and made the fateful decision to try and steal Gomes’ pickup truck out of his driveway. After being stabbed four times, Gomes crawled back up to the door of his Virginia Street home where he ultimately died. His girlfriend and 9-year-old son were inside at the time of the assault.
Anybody with any information about either of the two incidents in Lathrop over the weekend is encouraged to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department at 209.468.4400, or by sending a text message to 274637 (CRIMES) with any relevant information to either case. All phone calls and text tips can be anonymous.
