Calla High staging drive through grad ceremony May 22
drive thru
A drive thru high school graduation in Southern California.

It'll be the first graduation ceremony of its kind.

But perhaps not the last.

On Friday, May 22, Calla High will be having a parade/drive-thru ceremony, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Manteca Unified School District continuation campus  at 130 S. Austin Road — specifically, the school parking lot — will host the graduation parade.

According to Principal Dan Beukelman, the graduating seniors can pick up their cap and gowns along with their diplomas via drive-thru during this unprecedented event being held amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students will also receive their diploma, a personalized yard sign, free year book and any individual awards.

"Each student is highly encouraged to pick up their graduation items in their own vehicle — students are encouraged to decorate their vehicles," said the flier sent to the graduating seniors.

Added Beukelman: "However, students and parents are not allowed to get out of their vehicles during the parade."
