A licensed Manteca daycare provider is facing charges in the death of a 4-month-old boy.
Manteca Police Officers responded to a licensed daycare in the 2300 block of Merlin Lane regarding a 4-month-old male not breathing at 1:25 p.m. on Oct. 22.
Officers found an adult on-scene providing CPR to the infant.
Officers took over CPR until Manteca Fire and medics arrived and took over care.
The infant was transported to an area hospital and later transferred to Oakland Children’s Hospital where he died on Oct. 24.
There were no signs of trauma and the cause of death is pending autopsy results.
At the time of the original call, officers determined the owner of the licensed daycare, Roxanne Helus, was intoxicated and she was arrested for Felony Child Endangerment. She was booked into San Joaquin County Jail and later bailed out.
Due to the infant dying, the department will be adding further charges such as causing death to a child under 8-years-old.
There were a total of four adults and three other daycare children at the scene. The other children were checked and unharmed. Manteca Detectives were called and are continuing the investigation.
California Community Care Licensing – the agency that has jurisdiction over licensed daycare facilities in California – was contacted and responded to assist in the investigation.
The licensed daycare – Cherished Years Daycare - is run by Helus at her residence. It is not immediately known how long she has been in business or any prior history. The infant, Christian Olvera, was watched at the daycare during the week.
