Illegal fireworks — due to a wet spring that generated thick weed growth — pose an increased fire threat as the Fourth of July approaches. Already, dry grass fires have threatened structures in the city including 10 homes in southwest Manteca earlier this month that were saved thanks to a massive response that brought more than 20 engine companies from a half dozen agencies.
