A landscape company – that did not call 811 before digging – struck a 4-inch natural gas line while digging in the planter area on the northeast corner of West Antone Raymus Parkway and South Main Street.
The gas immediately started leaking. The sound was heard from about 50 yards away.
The natural gas line belongs to PG&E. The firm made the necessary repairs.
Residents near the leak site were evacuated for their safety.
Police said the incident highlights the need to call 811 and have the area marked for utility components prior to digging. Damaging utility lines while digging opens the responsible party to legal action, which can be avoided by having the area marked.
