Free summer lunch includes farmers market at park

Sherrie Jamero, the retiring Director of Students Programs, helped out Thursday at the Manteca Unified School District Nutrition Education Department’s Farmers Market held at Woodward Park.

Those attending the Manteca Unified School District’s Farmers Market Thursday hosted by the Nutrition Education Department had a chance to once again to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables.

This was part of the free Seamless Lunch Summer Program for youngsters between the ages of 2 through 18 held at Woodward Park – each received three “Nutritional Education Dollars” to purchase a choice of corn, peaches, nectarines, orange, apples, and squash, to name a few.

According to Linda Lund of the Nutition Education Department, each produce item was priced at $1 “to make it easy for everyone,” she noted.

This was also her final day on the job. After 17 ½ years with MUSD, Lund is retiring “to do everything” as she gladly handed out the Nutritional Education Dollars to the young shoppers for one last time.

Sherrie Jamero is also retiring. She served as the Director of Students Programs for the past two years and was once principal at nearby Woodward School during her 33 years with MUSD, spending that morning by helping out with the distribution of fresh corn and other produce at the Farmers Market.

The MUSD Farmers Market is held each summer in conjunction with the free lunch program as way for youngsters to use their math and money skills with eating healthy serving as an incentive.

The free Seamless Lunch Summer Program ensures that every youngster will have access to healthy food choices, and can be found at 28 locations throught the district – of that 21 are in Manteca, with four in Lathrop and three in the Weston Ranch community.

MUSD, in addition, offers up BBQ events at the various locations.
