South Main Street between Atherton Drive and Woodward Avenue will be closed starting Monday, April 13, and lasting until May 11.
It will allow the first segment of a three-phased endeavor to address ongoing traffic congestion on South Main south of the 120 Bypass to take place.
The 24-hour closure for 28 days will shorten the construction time frame by four to eight weeks and have it finished before the Memorial Day Weekend commemoration event takes place at Woodward Park.
The work involves road widening to allow for four lanes of through traffic, new PG&E infrastructure to be put in place, and the construction of a landscaped center median.
Once that work is completed, it will be followed by the widening of South Main from Atherton Drive to the 120 Bypass as well as traffic signal installation at South Main and Woodward Avenue.
City leaders required the developers of the Marketplace at Main to do the work as well as pay for it.
The new center that is now under construction includes a Save Mart, a Quick Quack Car Wash, a Starbucks, a Chipotle Kitchen, and a McDonald’s.
By closing the street section for a month not only will the time road work is taking place be cut at least in half but it also reduced the cost of the work.
