Manteca’s first gas station that will actually have EV chargers in place instead of just being wired for them will be built on the southeast corner of Lathrop and Union roads.

The City Council Tuesday gave the final approval needed for the building of a 5,200 square-foot Circle K convenience store with 12 fueling pumps.

It will also include building Manteca’s second Auto Zone auto parts store that will occupy a 6,816 square-foot building.

The owner plans to have six EV charging stations as part of the project dubbed Manteca Veterans’ Plaza.

In addition, the small retail development will not rely on PG&E to light its sign along Lathrop Road. The free-standing sign will be solar powered.

Councilman Mike Morowit noted the development effectively completes the transition of what had been a problematic parcel in years past.

Problems included RVs and trailers that had been apparently abandoned or stored there as well as homeless perennially trespassing.

The project will have access points to both Lathrop Road and Union Road that will be restricted to right turns in and right turns out.

The restriction will be passively enforced by a raised concrete finger median.

The finger median on Union Road will eliminate a traffic hazard by making it impossible to continue to make left turns in and left turns out of the Raley’s shopping center.

The project will also use Italian cypress along sound walls bordering nearby residential uses.

The trees were chosen as they grow at an average clip of three feet a year.
