Manteca has a connection with Greg LeMond, the three-time Tour de France winner who was honored Wednesday with the Congressional Gold Medal for being one of the United States’ greatest bicycle racers of all time.
It was back in the early 1980s when LeMond as a young teen was participating in a series of criterium races staged by the now defunct Manteca Bicycle Club in the Manteca Industrial Park.
It was back before the missing link to Moffat Boulevard was completed.
That made the business park a perfect candidate for a multiple lap closed circuit road bicycle races on a weekend.
It was the first year that LeMond had abandoned his dream of being a stunt skier given the Sierra slopes west of his Washoe Valley home in Nevada had little snow due to a drought, prompting him to switch to cycling.
His father also competed in the criterium.
Speaking of the industrial park, it used to be the site of annual summer teen dances with live music staged on Saturday evenings by the Manteca Youth Commission working with city recreation staff.
It was back in the day the City Council actually asked for input from the youth commission on things impacting teens in Manteca like whether cruising should be allowed. They also were encouraged to come up with their own youth orientated events such as teen dances.
Renters caught shooting
off illegal fireworks
Some have wondered if the city’s use of California’s host law to cite owners of property where illegal fireworks were launched is fair.
The citations, of which Manteca Police will be issuing 109 after three days of targeted enforcement the Fourth of July weekend, carry $1,000 fines.
Most rental agreements have standard clauses that hold tenants legally responsible for the costs associated with the breaking of any state, federal, or local law.
It was a clause added in the heyday of people renting McMansions for illegal indoor marijuana grows.
The bottom line: The tenants in such cases are legally on the hook to reimburse the property owner.
And if they fail to do so, they will likely be looking for a new place to rent.
