Christine Palmer is going to be at the corner of Daniels Street and Milo Candini Drive on the way to Costco this Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m.
She’ll be joined by anywhere from 5 to 15 other people as has been the case on previous Sundays dating back to the fall.
And Palmer is hoping other like-minded people will join as well.
“At nearly every event, someone tells us, ‘Finally I found my people, I didn’t know there was this kind of stuff going on in Manteca’,” Palmer said.
Organizers try to have a different theme each week.
This Sunday the effort will stress the need to protect women’s rights.
And, in what Palmer said is in the spirit of putting “party” back into the Democratic Party, some attendees will wear costumes. Palmer intends to show up in a Girl Scout uniform.
Palmer said the main goal is to show strength.
They want to make their point in a civil manner and as such invite others to engage in useful dialogue whether they are like-minded or have differing opinions.
As such, they respect all traffic rules and only cross streets with their signs when it is legal to do so.
The Manteca Democratic Club started the Sunday demonstrations in the lead up to the November special election that carried the redistricting measure for the House of Represnetativbes to counter map changes being made in Texas at the request of President Trump.
The Texas maps created more favorable seats for the Republicans in the upcoming midterms while the new California maps are expected to allow current GOP seats to be won by Democrats.
Besides other Manteca residents, they have been joined over the months by people from Escalon, Tracy, and Lodi.
The Manteca Democratic Club is hoping to stage other events to help get respectful dialogue going between people when it comes to various issues.
