MRPS staging fish fry today at hall

For decades Gil Fagundes organized and operated the annual fish fry fundraiser for the Manteca Ripon Pentecost Society.

And for the last several years, Fagundes’ nephew Frank Teixeira – who owns and operates the business that bears his uncle’s name – has kept that vision alive along with Fagundes’ wife Regina and the hundreds of members of the organization that has been providing people of Portuguese descent and the wider Manteca community a place to gather for more than a century.

And today, the spirit of the founder will be alive and well at Papa Gil’s Annual Fish Fry Dinner – which takes place at the M.R.P.S. Hall, located at 133 N. Grant Street, from 4 to 7 p.m.

“This is about carrying on his legacy and something that he really truly loved putting together every year,” Teixeira said. “I personally enjoy the great people surrounding and helping us do this to raise funds for the hall itself.

“And Papa Gil’s spirit is still there, and Regina is a big-time co-chair and we just support her cause greatly.”

Tickets for the event are $17 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under and can be purchased in advance at Fagundes Meats and Catering, located at 142 Jason Street, or at the door of the M.R.P.S. Hall – located at 133 N. Grant Street. Dinner is being prepared by Fagundes Meats as well as M.R.P.S. Hall members.
