A man driving a white van was shot after ramming two Manteca Police patrol units Wednesday afternoon in the In-n-Out Burger parking lot on West Yosemite Avenue just off the Highway 99 freeway.

Manteca Police opened fire on the driver of a white van Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of the In-n-Out Burger on West Yosemite Avenue after the motorist repeatedly rammed law enforcement vehicles.

The driver was transported to a nearby hospital. His condition was unknown as of 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The incident started shortly after 4 p.m. when officers responded to an incident involving a male driver in a white van in the restaurant’s drive-thru lane.

Several witnesses said the van was ramming cars in the drive-thru line prompting staff to refuse to serve the driver.

When officers first made contact, the suspect rammed a police vehicle.

After 20 minutes of the police trying to de-escalate the situation, the vehicle again accelerated and rammed at least two police vehicles.

It was determined by police the action posed an imminent threat to the safety of officers and the public.

That led to five officers discharging their firearms.

Witnesses said they heard multiple shots they believed were in excess of a dozen.

The van appeared to have been riddled by a dozen or so bullet holes.

As is standard in officer involved shootings, the San Joaquin Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol was enacted.

A police spokesman said the process ensures a thorough and impartial investigation involving multiple independent agencies.

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, the California Department of Justice Crime Lab, and the Manteca Police Department are jointly investigating the incident.

The In-N-Out parking lot and immediate area was cordoned off with crime scene tape and closed for hours.

Restaurant patrons and staff that witnessed the incident and shooting were interviewed by multiple agencies.

A department spokesman said additional information would be released as it becomes available.
