The Ripon City Council will need to increase speed limits on five streets sections in order to meet state requirements to continue the use of radar to snag speeders.
The council meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Ripon City Hall.
Based on survey results, staff is recommending speed limit adjustments for:
*Fourth Street from South Stockton Avenue to the dead end – increase from 25 mph to 30 mph.
*Garrison Way from Maple Avenue to Kamps Way – increase from 25 mph to 30 mph.
*Hoff Drive from Colony Road to Santos Avenue – increase from 25 mph to 30 mph.
*Parallel Avenue from Reynolds Avenue to East Main Street – increase from 25 mph to 30 mph.
*Santos Avenue from Hoff Drive to Frontage Road – increase from 25 mph to 35 mph.
Originally, the basic criteria required the 85 percentile speed from the survey to be the speed limit, but the City Council at a previous meeting was able to justify not raising the speed limit on Hoff Drive a full 10 mph faster to 35 mph.
Altogether, there were 41 street segments that were subjected to a periodic engineering and traffic survey conducted in compliance with the California Vehicle Code.
Ripon’s previous engineering and traffic survey was completed in 2015.
In order to maintain the legal enforceability of posted speed limits, a new survey was required. The 2025 E was conducted over a six-month period.
The proposed changes are consistent with traffic engineering standards and are intended to reflect prevailing traffic conditions while maintaining public safety.
