The Ripon Police Department currently operates 22 License Plate Readers that are strategically placed at 14 locations around town.

While the technology is still capable of rapidly scanning and cross-referencing license plates with available local, state, and federal databases, providing leads and evidence in a timely manner, the City of Ripon is looking to upgrade.

According police Chief Danny Sauer – based on his staff report at Tuesday’s Ripon City Council meeting – his department recently engaged Odin Systems, Inc. to inspect all the License Plate Readers due to a variety of operational issues.

“Following the assessment, Odin Systems recommended replacing nine License Plate Readers that have exceeded their useful life with seven newer models,” Sauer noted.

The updated models will be capable of scanning two lanes of traffic, reducing the need for multiple cameras at certain locations.

The cost for the replacement License Plate Readers would be about $65,448, paid via the General Department Capital Fund.
