Schools from River Islands recently took part in the 66th annual San Joaquin County STEAM Fair & Expo.
Included were students from EPIC Academy, RiTech Academy, and STEAM Academy – judges selected winners after reviewing the individual, group, and whole-class project at the Feb. 8 event held in Stockton.
In all, more than 600 students from 38 school participated in the fair, with 60 STEM professionals, teachers, college students, high school students, and various volunteers doing their part in judging the projects and conducting interviews.
SJCOE’s STEM programs seek to promote science and engineering exploration and understanding students.
Here’s some of the local standouts:
• Kindergarten through firsts grade – SCIENCE: second place, EPIC Academy, “Pumping Power” by Mikayla Sangapala and Aarohi Deshpande; third place, RiTech Academy, “Rainbow in a Jar” by Shreyas Jonnalagadda, Timothy Lara, and Shaurya Galla; ENGINEERING: first place, RiTech Academy, “Water Race to the Finish” by Nihira Velamati; third place, EPIC Academy, ‘Harnessing the Breeze” by Ahan Venkateshkumar and Avyukth Sumanth; SHOWCASE: second place, RiTech Academy, “Earthquake Detector” by Nithin Saminathan.
• Second through third grade – SCIENCE: second place, EPIC Academy, “Why Water, Soda – PH of Various Liquid Foods” by Yuha Ramkumar.
• Fourth through fifth grade – SCIENCE: first place, EPIC Academy, “Cable Driven Space Craft” by Saathvik Mahesh; second place, EPIC Academy, “Solar Hydroponics” by Anvi Deshpande; third place, STEAM Academy, third place, “Crazy Hydraulics” by Rehan Haaziq and Sabiyur Rahman.
• Sixth through eighth grade – SHOWCASE: first place (tie), EPIC Academy, ‘Function of the Heart” by Shivaank Nandi, Ashrith Tatiparthi, and Rithwik Yeddula & Intervention Convention, “Anti-Smudge Glove” by Ace Litz.
In addition, eight students from the STEAM Fair will represent San Joaquin County in the upcoming California Science and Engineering Fair in the spring.
They are Aditya Goyal and Adharv Shiju of Julies Cordes Elementary School (sixth through eighth graders, Lammersville Unified); Lucia Jose of Altamont Elementary School (sixth through eighth grade, Lammersville Unified); Alok Hiriyur of Evelyn Costa Elementary (sixth through eighth grade, Lammersville Unified; Pramiti Keloth of Evelyn Costa Elementary School (sixth through eighth grade, Lammersville Unified).
