The Ripon Unified District Office

The Ripon Unified school board on Monday will recognize those students who recently participated in the 26th annual San Joaquin County Spelling Bee Championships.

The county-wide events were held last month at the San Joaquin County Office of Education.

The first of the two consisted of the top fourth- through- sixth- grade spellers. Sydney Hildebrand (sixth grade, Ripon Elementary), Caleb Partan (fifth grade, Ripona Elementary), Gage Decena (sixth grade, Weston Elementary), and Jacob Machado (sixth grade, Colony Oak Elementary) were participants in the Elementary Division.

The Junior Division consisted of 43 seventh- through- ninth- grade students representing 14 school districts.

Avelin Ayala (eighth grade, Park View Elementary), Caitlyn Mooney (eighth grade, Weston), Salina Epperson (seventh grade, Park View), and Beauross Yan (ninth grade, Ripon High) took part in this year’s Spelling Bee.

At the 7 p.m. meeting in the Ripon City Hall Council Chamber, 259 N. Wilma Ave., the school board will recognize and present award certificates to each of the local SJC Spelling Bee participants.

Other items on the agenda include:

·         Trustees will recognize Ripon High senior Daniel Mortimer, who was selected as the recipient of the $5,000 Caldwell Flores & Winter Foundation Scholarship.

·         They’re also scheduled to hear a presentation by the California Online Public Schools Northern California Charter Petition Renewal.

·         Director of Curriculum & Instruction Dana Phelps will give an update on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress report.

·         The new school board officers will be administered the oath of office, with Caroline Hutto remaining as board president. Jason Winter is taking over as vice president from Kit Oase, who will serve as clerk.
