Food banks in Manteca every holiday see a surge in request for food around the holidays.

In many cases, there are families that usually don’t seek food assistance but either seasonal unemployment or expenses of the season including PG&E bills for heating put extra strains on their budgets making traditional holiday meals unaffordable.

For the past 20 years, the community has stepped up in a bid to make sure no families go without on Thanksgiving.

Among the upcoming turkey and food drives for Thanksgiving meals being staged in conjunction with the Second Harvest of the Greater Valley food bank are:

*Turkeyoke – Friday, Nov. 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Second Harvest Food Bank, 1220 Vanderbilt Circle, Manteca. Purchase tickets at localfoodbank.org

*Manteca Transit “Stuff the Bus” – Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 22–23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Food 4 Less, 131 Spreckels Ave, Manteca

*Manteca Firefighters Local 1874 “Fill the Fire Engine” – Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Safeway, 1187 S. Main St, Manteca
