Over the Sierra crest — about 150 miles to the east of Manteca, Oakdale, and Turlock — is one of the world’s largest active caldera volcanoes. It is the 20- by 10-mile Long Valley Caldera that is adjacent to the Mammoth Mountain lava fields.
