The City of Lathrop Police Department reported a hit-and-run with injury incent Friday morning near Mossdale Elementary School.
A 13-year-old girl was struck by a motor vehicle while using a crosswalk at Golden Spike Trail and Inland Passage Way shortly before 8 o’clock.
“The driver made no attempt to slow down or stop after the collision and fled the scene,” said local police via social media.
They added that the girl sustained pain and soreness to her left foot, which was run over by the vehicle, and to her left side.
Using an extensive investigation while getting help from witnesses – couple that with residential security footage and police surveillance technology – Lathrop officers identified the suspect, based on her California identification card, as Desirae Castillo, 19.
According to police, she was contacted that same day and admitted to leaving the scene of the incident, stating “she was uninsured and unlicensed to operate a motor vehicle,” police said.
She was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail for felony hit-and-run.
Police, who thanked community members for providing information leading to identifying the suspect, ask that drivers “slow down and stay alert” in school zones and to watch for children crossing the street, especially during the hours when they’re being dropped off or picked up.
