The Manteca Police Department is searching for any information the public may have about a man that they believe walked into the Well Fargo bank location on North Main Street and robbed it on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the agency, the incident occurred shortly after noon when a light-skinned black male wearing a full-face covering walked up to a teller inside of the bank and demanded money. No weapon was seen in the surveillance footage, and the suspect left the location on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Officers that responded searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

While the face covering prevented surveillance cameras from capturing a good image of the suspect’s face he is described as a light-skinned black male with an average building standing at approximately 6-feet tall.

No additional information about the suspect was released by authorities, and additional details may be released at a later date depending on the outcome of the investigation.

Because the money that is kept in banks is backed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, bank robbery is a federal crime that is routinely investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation – the agency that has maintained jurisdiction over the crime since the 1930s and the era of John Dillinger and highly-publicized bank robberies.

While the FBI has jurisdiction over bank robbery cases, individual agencies like the Manteca Police will usually investigate them unless the federal agency takes an interest – which has been the case in the past when the robberies were determined to be part of a spree committed by a single person or group.

Anyone with any information about the suspect or the incident is encouraged to contact Manteca Police dispatch at 209.456.8101.
