For the second straight year, the Young Life program is selling fireworks.
Volunteers of the faith-based organization for local middle school students have been working the Phantom Fireworks booth located in the parking lot at the corner of North Main Street and Yosemite Avenue since Saturday.
The group is among 14 non-profit groups permitted to sell safe and sane fireworks this year in Manteca.
According to staff member Bradi Resendiz, proceeds from sales will support various mentorships and other programs including the Woodleaf Young Life Camp.
Some 13 leaders – adult, high school, and middle school – recently attended the five-day camp located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains nestled next to the Plumas National Forest. Young Life campers, an estimated 250, took part in various activities while receiving inspiration from the words of the Gospel each day, Resendiz noted on Monday.
Young Life, locally, can currently be found at several Manteca Unified school sites, including Joshua Cowell, Shasta, McParland, and Veritas.
Young Life is always looking to expand to other school sites.
The sales of “safe and sane” fireworks – Phantom and TNT – kicked off Saturday in Manteca, Ripon and Lathrop, and will continue through the Fourth of July or while supplies last.
The Young Life booth will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
The Manteca Police Department said that any fireworks that flies in the air, explodes, or behaves in an uncontrollable and unpredictable manner is illegal.
Safe and sane fireworks with the State Fire Marshal seal are legal within Manteca city limits.
Local police and fire marshals will be in full force during these next few days, deploying drones.
The fine for illegal use of fireworks is $1,000.
