Turkeys R Us’ celebration of being able to meet the Christmas dinner needs of struggling families in Manteca, Lathrop, and Ripon was short lived.
Just days after organizers thought they had meet the need late requests came in from local food closets. That means Turkeys R Us are now about 300 turkeys short with two weeks to go.
Second Harvest Food Bank Executive Director Mike Mallory said the late surge in need isn’t surprising given the state of the economy.
Mallory said the Turkeys R US effort can’t meet the need in Manteca as well as Ripon and Lathrop without more donations of turkeys or money to the fund.
Turkeys R Us was able to cover the local need for 1,250 local families in the three communities for Thanksgiving and has 740 toward the requests placed by the 20 food closets serving Manteca, Lathrop, and Ripon for Christmas.
Christmas is tougher on families that are struggling to make ends meet as other pressures of the season come into play.
In previous years, construction workers often would donate $100 a pop to the effort. This year, some of those previous donors are now struggling to make ends meet. The Turkeys R Us effort has made it possible for other once-a-year people who seek assistance to have a traditional holiday meal for their families including single working moms, dual income households that have lower paying jobs, and senior citizens.
The food bank is being hit with the triple whammy of increased need, food donations dropping and monetary donations falling off by about 35 percent.
