STOCKTON—  Stockton Civic Theatre will present the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein, the world’s most beloved musical, “The Sound of Music”  through Sunday, Dec. 14.

The original 1960 Broadway production received five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the subsequent 1965 motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters—coupled with her generosity of spirit— gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry.  Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre.

The musical boasts an extensive cast led by Lydia Merriam-Pigg as Maria, Martin Lehman as Captain Von Trapp, and Cynthia Dario Good as Mother Abbess.  The score of “The Sound of Music” is universally known, with hits such as “Do Re Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Every Mountain,” and “Edelweiss,” just to name a few.

The show is directed by Jim Coleman, a multi-award winning director and musical director.  Assisting him will be James M. Snyder as Assistant Director and James Reed executing choreography. Paul Kimball is Musical Director conducting a live orchestra.

Performances continue through Sunday, Dec, 14, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.  Tickets are $25 for adults, $21 for seniors and $15 for students and children 12 and under.

The theatre is located at 2312 Rose Marie Lane, Stockton. For tickets, call the Box Office Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at (209) 473.2424, or go online at sctlivetheatre.com.
