An estimated 10,000 mourners paid their final respects to Wenjian Liu.
Included was Mike Perry of the Ripon Police Department.
He was among sea of blue uniforms made up of men and women from the various law enforcement agencies on hand earlier this month to attend the funeral for Liu, 32, who was the New York Police Department officer killed in an ambush along with his partner Rafael Ramos on Dec. 20.
Services were held in Brooklyn.
“Officer Perry represented the department and the City of Ripon at the service on his own time and at his own cost,” said Mike Restuccia at last Tuesday’s Ripon City Council meeting.
By that, he took his regular scheduled shift off, utilized his free flights offered by Jet Blue Airlines, and paid all associated expenses out of his own pocket, the elected leader explained.
All told, Perry’s expenses came out to $326.
Even though he took his own time to attend the funeral and did not request to be reimbursed, Restuccia and his colleagues believe that the action here transcends any cost to Perry, who took it upon himself to represent the City of Ripon and the Ripon Police Department.
Council agreed 4-1 to reimburse him.
Mayor Leo Zuber casted the dissenting vote.
“I have pride in the fact that Officer Perry took it upon himself to attend the funeral,” he said. “(But) there is a process, and it needs to be followed.
That policy is scheduled to be brought back before council on Zuber’s request to staff.
His concern was that other folks may make similar-type requests to council.
“There is a process problem with this issue,” said Zuber. “If Council starts letting individuals come back after the fact and get reimbursed for things they did ask for in the beginning, it will become a problem.”
