NerdWallet is a personal finance website that deals with information regarding mortgages, refinancing, various loan options and related information. The site has tools to compare mortgage rates, a mortgage caculator, and a cost of living calculator. All are designed to help provide a general idea of affordability of a family’s ability to buy a home and live in specific cities.

Site writer Anna Helhoski noted “Northern California has a reputation for pricey living, but young families are still finding affordable homes and good public schools in the suburbs of Sacramento and Fresno, as well as areas east of San Francisco.

“Half of the 10 best places for young families in Northern California are clustered in suburbs of the state capital, NerdWallet found. Three other communities in our top 10 are in the east part of the Bay Area, where the technology industry is booming, and two are farther south, in the Fresno area.”
