RUSD considers Academic Probation

Trustees of the Ripon Unified School District will look at three options Monday on the proposed Academic Probation policy.

At the 7 p.m. open session in the Council Chambers, 259 N. Wilma Ave., they’ll look at the one currently in place for the past two years and in compliance with the California Interscholastic Federation bylaws which determines eligibility.

Student athletes, in order to participate, must have an un-weighted 2.0 grade point average with no “Fs” during the previous grading period.

Academic Probation helps those with GPAs of 2.0 and above but with one failing grade.

Students can apply for this in order to remain on the team. He or she, however, is prohibited from participating until the grades improve to eligibility standards – an advisor or coach are usually the ones providing the weekly progress reports.

The policy isn’t board-approved, but it is the one favored by those at Ripon High.

“In my 20 years (at RHS), it’s been the best one by far,” said boys varsity basketball coach Rod Wright at last month’s meeting.

Freshmen benefit by coming in with a clean slate.

Proposal A will include all of the above along with certain co-curricular activities.

Proposal B removes any activity associated with any curricular program from the requirements of academic eligibility while maintaining eligibility requirements for extra-curricular activities.

In Proposal C, the student athlete must be academically eligible to participate in any extra or co-curricular activity.

Other agenda items include:

The board recognizing Stephanie Hobbs for her service on the Measure G Citizen’s Oversight Committee.

The San Joaquin County Office of Education looking to maintain the alternative education option known as the ONE.program for students expelled by RUSD. This is the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding between RUSD and SJCOE.

Trustees giving their OK for the Ripon High Future Farmers of America to attend the State Fair in Sacramento to show livestock on July 15 through July  19 while allowing two members of the chapter to attend the National Leadership Conference, from July 18 through July 26.
