A late model Chevy Tahoe SUV was presented to the Manteca Fire Department Seniors Assisting Fire Effort (SAFE)  volunteers to be used in their support functions, courtesy of the South San Joaquin Irrigation District.

The SUV had been in use during recent years by SSJID manager Jeff Shields. It has some 125,000 miles on it.  The volunteers will use it for various assignments, including fire prevention checks.

Manteca Fire Chief Kirk Waters spoke briefly at the district’s board meeting at the headquarters on East Highway 120 east of Austin Road minutes after the vehicle was presented to four SAFE members.

In thanking the directors, Waters lauded the district for being involved in the community with their support of SAFE, SHARP and with the activities of the Boys & Girls Club.

Included in their list of assignments, the SAFE members conduct mail runs five days a week to each fire station and other city offices.  Their members man the safety trailer at school presentations.  They also provide assistance to firefighters in extreme emergencies and large fires.

SAFE conducts weed abatement and re-checks.  Members visit block parties and demonstrate safety procedures at National Night Out and conduct inspections of all the fireworks booths every July.

They are on duty at the Manteca Street Fair, the Pumpkin Fair and the annual Kids’ Fishing Derby where they operate the department’s Safety Fair as well as the July 4th celebration.

Any senior who wishes to join the ranks of SAFE may pick up an application at a Manteca fire station.
