It’s a fashion show like no other.

The participants model three of their own clothes while guests enjoy lunch that is included in the $5 admission at the door. Some entertainment is also thrown into the fun program.

After the fashion show comes the auction. Every piece of clothing modeled – ranging from dressy outfits for evening wear, and casual clothes such as a tunic worn over a beach wear – goes up for bid. Those that don’t get snagged in the bidding are given to St. Vincent de Paul Society, the main beneficiary of this unique fund-raiser organized and presented by St. Anthony’s Archangels, a youth service group of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Manteca.

All proceeds from this fun event, which takes place Saturday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in St. Anthony’s gym, will also go to the all-volunteer charity organization which helps needy families in Manteca and surrounding area with food, clothing and other emergency needs year-round.

The fashion show is being held for the second year in a row following its successful launch last year.

The clothes that will be used at the fashion show are donated by the models themselves.

“They will pick three outfits from their own wardrobe – something dressy, something casual or something they can throw over a bikini when they go to the beach,” said Maira Campos, the current president of the St. Anthony’s Archangels.

The program will revolve around the “Spring Garden Party” theme of this year’s fashion show, said Campos who is a senior at Sierra High School.

She said that for the young ones participating in the fashion show, it’s not always easy “letting go of the clothes from their wardrobe that they never get to wear again, but it’s for a good cause,” she said.

In addition to the fashion show and auction, there will be a raffle of all the table centerpieces especially made for the occasion. These are long-stemmed silk daisies arranged in tall glass vases filled with lemons and limes.

“These are real lemons and limes,” Campos pointed out.

First fashion show a success

The fashion show organizers – St. Anthony’s Archangels headed by coordinator Diane Lehman and their supporters – are hoping to duplicate the success of last year’s fund-raiser.

“It was really successful. The turnout was really great,” said Erica Campos, a sophomore at California State University, Stanislaus, who was the Archangels’ president last year. Maira, her successor, is her younger sister.

For the refreshments at that fashion show, the members made desserts from the cookbook put together by the Archangels. Copies of the cookbook were likewise sold during the program.

Anthony’s Archangels is the church’s youth service group whose projects year-round include helping St. Vincent de Paul Society. They also have fun activities such as a field trip to Laser Quest in Modesto which features fun entertainment for the whole family.

“It’s one of the rewards for the service projects that we do,” Maira Campos said.

Anthony’s Archangels meets every second Friday of the month at 6 p.m. in the church’s Rec Hall.
