A woman walking or possibly running in the darkened number one lane of Highway 99 Monday night was struck and killed when a Ripon motorist failed to see her in time to stop, according to the California Highway Patrol.

April Anne Aguilar, 28, of Tracy, was killed instantly some 1500 feet south of Yosemite Avenue at 11:36 p.m., a CHP spokesman reported.  The accident occurred as the motorist was merging onto the freeway from the southbound on ramp driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix.  The driver was uninjured and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP officers said that drugs or alcohol possibly contributed to the woman’s choice of entering the freeway lanes on foot.

Highway Patrol public affairs officer Angel Acero said the CHP discourages anyone from walking away from their car should it break down on the freeway.  It is best that they stay with their vehicle, he said.
