George Ervin Sommerfeld, Jr. obit

It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of George Sommerfeld, Jr. on June 4th, 2024.

George was the son of George and Ethel Sommerfeld of French Camp, Born January 6th, 1945, the fourth of four children. He graduated from Manteca High School in 1962 and went on to a

successful career with Caltrans. His employment was briefly interrupted in 1967 with a draft card that sent him to Vietnam for the Army.  While in Vietnam he was involved in several recurrences. He received numerous citations, gold and silver stars as well as befriending General George S Patton III. This friendship allowed for adventures that the normal non-commissioned officers did not usually get.  When he returned home to civilian life, he went back to work for Caltrans and back to his wife Carol whom he had married in 1968 between military training. He later retired from Caltrans after 42 years as a Civil Engineer.  Upon retirement he traveled the world with his loving wife as he had always dreamed. They visited

Europe, Asia, Australia, Ireland, England, Hawaii as well as most of the continental US.

George is survived by his wife Carol of 56 years, son David, daughter Debi, two brothers, one sister and four grandchildren whom he adored.
