Gerry C. Gomes, 88, of Manteca, passed into God’s loving arms on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, CA.  She was born in Manteca, on August 5, 1921 to Rose E. and Tony L. Gomes who were dairy farmers.  She was one of 9 children and she grew up in the Manteca/Ripon area.  Gerry loved music. A skilled guitar player in her early 20s, she played her guitar and harmonica and sang on KTRB radio station in Modesto on the Chester Smith children’s weekly program in the 1940’s. Throughout her years, she loved to sing and play her guitar at many family gatherings and other special occasions.  She worked for 40 years at Escalon Packers Cannery. Gerry always drove her 1957 Blue & White Ford Fairlane around town.

Gerry was a very generous and loving person and will be best remembered for the numerous acts of kindness she has shown to others throughout the years including volunteer and charity work.  Survived by her sister, Alberta Merritt of Modesto, her brother Monte Gomes of Galt, and close dear friends, Ada Van Ryn and Gisele Wheeler of Manteca, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and godchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Harold “Bud” Gomes, Stanley Gomes, and Timothy Gomes, and sisters, Viola Morris, Erma Muir and Dolores Martinez.

Gerry was an active member of the St. Anthony’s parish and Legion of Mary. She had a strong Catholic faith and is also leaving behind many good friends at her parish. She was well known in her community.  Gerry was inspired by the words to one of her favorite songs that she loved to sing:  “One Day at a Time” and it goes like this: “One Day at a Time, Dear Jesus, that is all I am asking from you. To give me the strength to do every day, what I have to do. Yesterday is gone, Dear Jesus and tomorrow might never be mine. Lord help me today, show me the way, One day at a time.”
