Lucille Eleanor Harris passed away at her home on February 2, after a lengthy illness. Born December 19, 1932 in Manteca, California, She attended Manteca High School, graduating with the class of 1950. After graduation, she attended Humphreys Business College in Stockton, where she studied bookkeeping. In 1955, she and her husband, William Harris, purchased a welding shop in the Nile Garden area of Manteca. In 1960, the welding shop evolved into Tuff Boy, a leader in the manufacture and leasing of highway trailers. Three generations of the Harris family are presently involved in the Tuff Boy companies.
Lucille is survived by her son, Martin Harris (Kerry); her daughters, Marcia Perkins (Bryce), and Melissa King (Rick). Also surviving are seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and her sister, Marie Shoemaker.
Her local affiliations included Chamber of Commerce (both Manteca and Ripon), Manteca Downtown Committee, Manteca Historical Society, Spring Creek Country Club, and St. Anthony’s Church.
Lucille was a staunch supporter of citizen’s rights. Beginning with the 1977 state legislative committee for tort reform and continuing as a member of Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) and the Civil Justice Association of California (CJAC) , she called for judicial integrity and accountability.
Lucille was also a steadfast believer in the importance of education. She was a major sponsor of Great Valley Writing Project, a nonprofit partner of California State University Stanislaus that provides educational programs for students and teachers in Manteca, Lathrop, Ripon, Escalon, and Tracy.
A memorial service will be held at St. Anthony’s Church in Manteca on Thursday, February 24 at 11:00 a.m. 525 E. North St. Manteca, Ca.
