Accepted into Glory with his Lord and Savior on January 21, 2022 at 79 years of age in Ripon, California.
Max is survived by his wife, Donna, his two children, David Slayter and Sheila Harris, three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Max leaves behind five siblings, Patti (Bill) Copeland, Leon Slayter, Gerald (Joanne) Slayter, Darlene (John) Wilson and Gary (Anne) Slayter. He also has many nieces and nephews living in several states.
Max grew up in the Livingston area and attended local schools. After graduation, he was employed with Holly Sugar in Tracy, LOF in Lathrop and the last twenty-five years with Van Groningen and Sons in farming production. He was a worker, enjoyed each job and shared humorous stories from each employment. Max and Donna enjoyed traveling. They visited several countries with a travel group that included family and friends. Max was the jokester and his humor added a fun twist to each experience. Max enjoyed a good card game with fellow travelers and usually won due to his fierce competitive spirit. Max was a cowboy. He enjoyed feeding his horses, shoveling manure and horse backpacking trips with like-minded horse buddies into remote wilderness areas. Sleeping on the ground or sharing hunting stories around the glowing camp fire was the essence of being a cowboy. Horse trip memories were shared and retold for many years when socializing. Lots of fun memories!
Gardening was a favorite hobby. Each February, Max would plan the spring planting. Much joy and anticipation was shared when the first seedling sprouted. Harvesting abundant crops was shared with many friends and family. Max had a generous heart. Max was diagnosed in 2020 with pancreatic cancer. He fought the disease but after fourteen months of treatment he lost the battle. He is at rest. Praise the Lord.
Max was a faithful member of Almond Valley Christian Reformed Church. He was a child of God. He readily gave his spirit into Jesus’ arms. Praise God.
A celebration of life was held at Almond Valley Christian Reformed Church on February 2. Internment was on February 8, at Ripon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to: Ripon Christian High School Industrial Arts, 435 Maple Ave., Ripon, CA 95366 or Modesto Pregnancy Center, 2801 Coffee Rd. A5 Modesto, CA 95355
