Mary Varela (Basques), 88, entered into rest on February 2, 2017 in Manteca, CA. She was born on March 25, 1928 in Sheridan, Wyoming.
   She is preceded in death by her four siblings and her grandson, Martin Miguel Silva.
   Mrs. Varela is survived by her husband of ten years, Henry Varela, and her eleven children, Martin Basques, Lupe Barry, Sam Gama, Gloria Winhall, Triny Shawver, John Gama, Rudy Gama, Mary Christina, Ralph Vasquez, Mark Yanez and Marlena Yanez, as well as, 24 grandchildren, several great- grandchildren and great- greatgrandchildren. In addition, Mary is survived by her one brother, Simon Basques and her two sisters, Connie Vigil and Corrine Basques.
   Mary lived in Modesto for the past 15 years, previously of both Manteca and Stockton. She was an educator for Stanislaus County and San Joaquin County working as a bilingual teacher. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially family gatherings, cooking, entertaining and socializing. She loved attending church at Gospel Assembly in Manteca and volunteering her time at North East Senior Community Center in Stockton. Mary will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Franklin and Downs Funeral Home, 1050 McHenry Ave., Modesto, CA. Celebration of life will be on Thursday, February 9, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at Franklin and Downs Funeral Home also.  She will be laid to rest at Acacia Memorial Park, 801 Scenic Drive, Modesto, CA.
