A change to the graduation requirements at Ripon High was put on hold.
Trustees of the Ripon Unified School District pulled the proposed policy from the agenda at their Feb. 8 meeting.
“It was not ready for adoption at that time,” said RHS Principal Lance Morrow. “We’re hoping to bring this item back at a future date after investigating and doing more research on the matter.”
The proposed new requirements, once approved, would apply to next year’s freshmen or, rather, the Class of 2020.
The plans, thus far, call for Keyboarding to be replaced by a semester of World Geography.
Part of the reason for that can be attributed to the California Assessment of Student Performance and Program system, where keyboarding skills are already necessary for those in elementary school.
“Ripon Unified recognizes this need and has put in place many program such as Dance Mat Typing, Type to Learn, and Typing.com to ensure that our students are prepared to be successful in the 21st Century classroom,” Morrow in his report.
He added: “Because these programs are in place at the K-8 schools, we feel it is redundant to require high school students to take this course when they have already been taught these skills.”
World Geography, which has already been approved by the board for next year’s course catalogue, calls for students to integrate “thinking skills, historical processes, and content,” the report said.
The other graduation requirement request was for Mathematics to be increased from two to three years to ensure that RHS students will be college and career ready in the increasingly technological world.
